Top games to see as season tips off

Kentucky’s high school basketball season will tip off Monday. Here are four games to watch this week involving Louisville-area schools.

State rankings are from The Courier Journal’s preseason poll of coaches.

Girls

No. 2 Sacred Heart at No. 15 Anderson County, 7 p.m. Tuesday: The Valkyries open their season with a tough road trip to Lawrenceburg.

Sacred Heart senior Erin Toller, a University of Kentucky signee, will play for the first time since the end of her sophomore season after going through two ACL knee surgeries. Toller joins fellow seniors Destinee Marshall (Radford signee) and Kristen Clemons (Belmont volleyball signee) to give the Valkyries one of the state’s top trios.

Junior guard Sophie Smith leads an Anderson County squad that was 27-7 last season.

No. 16 Butler at No. 14 Christian Academy, 7:30 p.m. Thursday: It’s a matchup of two first-year coaches in Butler’s Wyatt Foust and CAL’s Cameron Pridemore.

Junior forward Tiarra East leads the Bearettes. CAL’s Shelby Calhoun, a Virginia Tech signee, is one of the state’s top seniors.

Boys

No. 5 Fern Creek at No. 6 Ballard, 7:30 p.m. Wednesday: This top-10 battle could be the top game in the state this week.

Fern Creek is the Sixth Region favorite behind a solid trio of juniors in Jaden Rogers, Darrius Washington and Zek Montgomery.

Seniors Lewis Richards, Terrence McDaniels and Josh Minkins leads the Bruins, who will be without 6-foot-6 senior forward Rashad Bishop (wrist injury) until January.

No. 1 Male at Seneca, 7:30 p.m. Friday: The Bulldogs will get a tough Seventh Region test Friday before heading to Saturday’s Marshall County Hoopfest.

Senior guard Tyren Moore, a Lincoln Memorial signee, will lead Male while senior guard Howard Fleming (Illinois State signee) is out until January after having shoulder surgery.

Seneca lost its top five scorers from last season’s 19-11 squad but still was ranked fourth in the region in a preseason coaches poll.
